I took a trip to my local whole foods recently smack dab in the middle of bulking season. What did I come out of the store with?

I’ll show you…

We’re going to dive into some of the best anabolic foods for a successful bulk.

Last week I went to Whole Foods with my camera guy and we decided to have some fun as I strolled around the store deciding what would be the best bulking season options.

Make sure you check out the video. If you’re short on time I’ll give you a quick summary of the best options below.

These are foods that are going to be perfect for mass building as they all fit into the following categories:

  • Budget friendly so you don’t break the bank in the middle of bulking season.
  • Very high calorie options so you can get in the caloric surplus easier.
  • Delicious, because nobody likes stuffing their face full of non-delicious options.
  • Will help you increase your anabolic hormones like testosterone.

Are you curious what I pick out at my grocery store in the middle of my lean bulk?

Let’s first dive into the protein options.

High-Quality Protein For Bulking

Here is a list of the high protein options that I picked out.

Grass Fed Beef

This stuff is loaded with high quality protein, zinc, CLA, and omega 3 fatty acids. If I could pick just 2 protein sources for bulking season it would be this, and the second choice.

Cans of Wild Caught Salmon

Not only are cans of wild caught salmon cheap, but they are one of the highest quality sources of protein because they are loaded with omega 3 fatty acids.

Ground Turkey

Ground turkey is a pretty versatile protein choice during bulking season because you can make it into a scrambler, a burger, and even throw it in some omelets.

Mass Building Carbs

It is super important that you get in at least 2 grams of carbs per lb. of bodyweight during bulking season – so here are my top 3 choices.

Organic Potatoes (Red Skin)

Potatoes are the perfect carbohydrate source because they are calorie dense and are loaded with vitamin C. All kinds of potatoes are great for bulking season – but I really like red skin potatoes tossed in some olive oil because its an easy way to get in a lot of calories.

Brown Rice

Because its not logical to eat potatoes for every single meal, I decided to throw in some brown rice as well. Brown rice is loaded with muscle building nutrition – and is a far superior choice than most of the carbs guys eat during bulking season like bread and wheat products.

These are the types of carbs that will slow you down, and I highly recommend that you go with “1 ingredient” carbs like potatoes, rice, and the next member on the list to keep your energy levels high.

Pineapple

Pineapple is my favorite fruit of all time and also helps you digest your food. Its also a healthy little dessert with honey and chia seeds – my favorite testosterone boosting dessert recipe!

Healthy Fats

Since fat is 9 calories per gram – it gives you the best opportunity to add in a calorie surplus.

Here are my top 3 grocery store choices.

Nut Butter

In the video I show you 3 different types of nut butter that I all eat occasionally – but if you are looking for the cheapest and most delicious option I recommend chocolate flavored peanut butter.

It only has 7 grams of sugar per serving – and makes anything you put it on extra delicious – like a healthier version of Nutella.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is my bulking season cooking oil of choice. During cutting season I go with coconut oil – but during bulking season I love adding olive oil on everything from my omelets, steaks, and even on top of my rice.

Organic Eggs

Organic eggs are a great source of protein – but they are also loaded with testosterone boosting healthy fats. I try to eat 6-8 of them per day during bulking season.

Desserts and Snacks

Organic Dark Chocolate Bars

Dark chocolate is really high in calories – and contains powerful antioxidants that can help you in the middle of bulking season. I like to enjoy a few dark chocolate bars per week during bulking season.

Just stay away from the overpriced ones at whole foods if you are looking for budget friendly options.

Mixed Nuts

Nuts are really high in calories and contain healthy fats – making them the perfect snack for your mass gaining diet.

Brazil nuts are really high in selenium and I recommend eating a few of them per day. Almonds are loaded with magnesium, and cashews are absolutely delicious and I could eat an entire bag of them each day!

Try to pick out a few types of the nuts that you enjoy and eat 3-4 servings per day during bulking season.
